Coal Town Coffee Training

The Hoogah team headed for Ammanford to undergo a coffee 101 crash course with our coffee supplier Coal Town Coffee.

Founder Scott gave a tour of the Foundry Road roastery, showing us the different roasters on site and explaining the process of roasting beans within the machines and how they differ from capacity and heating methods, ending the tour showing us a roaster from the 1950s - one of two still functioning within the UK.

After a run down of operations within Foundry Road we were taken upstairs and Gary took over our sessions, teaching us about the history of coffee and how we have developed our methods of consuming it - learning about the ‘5 waves of coffee’, how coffee goes from plant to package, we learnt about cupping and how to get the best result from the beans farmed and to utilise the methods available for that perfect cup of coffee.

We wrapped up our day with a bit of friendly competition, splitting off into two teams we battled it out for the best textured milk and latte art.

With some strong efforts from the whole team Mick came away triumphant winning herself a Coal Town mug before we headed back to Swansea!

Big thanks for Team Coal Town for sharing their time, knowledge and hospitality with us!

We love sharing the passion for quality products and knowledge with our staff and to work so closely with our suppliers allows us to do this and to pass on our knowledge with you when visiting us in store on Bryn Yr Mor Road.
